The National Trauma Centre (NTC), housed at the National Hospital cost more than N900 million and would expand the hospital’s capacity to deal with mass casualty, officials said.
President Goodluck Jonathan described the centre as evidence of a “strong resolve to improve welfare and wellbeing” of people.
In comments delivered by Vice President Namadi Sambo at the official opening of the NTC, the president promised consistent upgrade of emergency health care to meet the standards in those countries where Nigerians go to seek medical care.
The NTC is among 12 centres earmarked for feasibility studies into possible public-private partnership, health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said.
“It was born (out) of a clear need as there has been an increase in the number of persons sustaining physical trauma from a variety of causes and the frequency with which mass casualties now occur in the country,” he said.
The new 80-bed facility is housed on three floors of a new building on National Hospital premises; the fourth floor is a helipad for air ambulances.
