The federal government has declared that the clean-up operations of Ogoni land in the Niger Delta region will take decades.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo declared this at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday while receiving a delegation of the Deeper Christian Life Church, led by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi.
The vice president emphasised that peace was needed in Ogoni land in order to be able to carry on with the clean-up exercise.
He stated: “The clean-up of Ogoni is very important, the situation is very bad, I have been in the area a few times.”
Osinbaji had on June 2, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari, flagged off the clean-up operation that had suffered environmental degradation due to exploration activities.
The clean-up exercise was recommended in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report.
The Niger Delta Avengers and other militant groups had continued blowing up oil installations in the restive region.
The vice president, however, assured that the government was working diligently on effective solutions to the challenges.
Earlier, Pastor Kumuyi noted that he was in Abuja for a crusade and decided to visit Osinbajo and pledged to continue to pray for Buhari’s administration as well as the nation’s progress.
