The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nsukka Zone, on Friday accused the federal government of not being ready to restore the autonomy of universities in the country.
The zonal coordinator of ASUU, Raphael Amokaha, while briefing journalists in Makurdi over many unresolved issues with the federal government, stressed the need for President Bola Tinubu to act to avert a crisis.
Amokaha advised the government among other issues worrying the union to ensure the complete disengagement of universities from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) whether new, old or freshly introduced Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS).
Our correspondent recalled that ASUU over the past four years have had a running battle with the federal government over IPPIS, a payment platform which the union argued negates university autonomy.

The union explained that the government continued to explore other options of payments to universities staff including the use of new IPPIS at a huge cost while it refused to utilise the free alternative offered them by ASUU.
The union however criticised the National Universities Commission (NUC) for being unable to advise the government despite its mandate of superintending standards and best practices in Nigerian universities.
