FG moves to reinforce moral values with education skills curriculum

The federal government is set to introduce a new curriculum focused on skills development to reinforce moral values in schools at all educational levels in Nigeria.

Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu, disclosed this at the flag-off of teacher training and the launch of sensitisation materials on moral reorientation and regeneration in basic education in Abuja on Wednesday.

The event organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) aimed at strengthening the moral framework of the educational system and building future generations of learners equipped not just with knowledge.

Sununu emphasised that moral reorientation and regeneration are essential components in building the social capital that the nation needs.

He noted that as the country faces several societal changes, such as increasing incidents of terrorism, internet fraud, sexual biases, indiscipline, and violence among young people, the need for moral regeneration cannot be overstated.

“To our teachers, who are beneficiaries of this training, I want to remind you that you are the cornerstone of this moral regeneration effort. As educators, you not only impart knowledge but also serve as role models for our young people. The way you conduct yourselves, the values you exhibit, and the attitude you foster in your classrooms all serve as powerful lessons for the learners you guide,” he added.

On his part, the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, stated that the programme began over a year ago.

“We have identified many challenges within our basic education sector. We are concerned that education is not just about imparting knowledge; it is also about developing morally conscious individuals who are responsive to the needs of their fellow beings and who have a concern for society.

“Ultimately, we aim to build individuals capable of contributing positively to Nigeria. This programme reflects our commitment to addressing these concerns, and we are collaborating with various agencies,” he said.
