FG launches digital literacy initiative, to train 30m people in 3 years

The federal government has unveiled “Digital Literacy for All Initiative” targeting the training of over 30 million Nigerians, particularly those in the informal sector and rural communities.

The effort aims to empower them to harness digital technologies for enhanced productivity in key sectors of the economy.

Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, the Director General and CEO of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), who disclosed this during the programme’s launch in Minna, the capital of Niger State, outlined the government’s goal to achieve 70 per cent digital literacy among the populace within the next three years.

He said, “The initiative is focused on equipping rural farmers, small-scale traders and other citizens with digital skills to connect directly with consumers and markets.”

He noted that the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy was collaborating with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to implement the initiative, utilising youth corps members to train target groups nationwide.

He further said, “In addition, a digital literacy curriculum is being developed for primary, secondary and tertiary institutions nationwide to introduce digital literacy as a core subject.”

Brigadier General YD Ahmed, Director General of NYSC, commended the initiative, highlighting its potential to accelerate national development.

He noted that training corps members in digital technologies would enhance their self-reliance.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, expressed gratitude to the organisers for selecting the state to host the programme’s launch.

He emphasised that the rapid pace of global change necessitated the adoption of digital technologies to remain competitive.
