The Federal Ministry of Water Resources has handed over a total of 7,521 hectares of rehabilitated irrigation sites to farmers operating at the Kano River Irrigation Scheme (KRIS).
The gesture is under its ‘Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING)) Project’ aimed at the capacity building of Water Users Association members (WUAS), rehabilitation and modernisation of irrigation and drainage systems, among other tasks.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Hussein Adamu, an engineer, said the rehabilitated sectors would now be conducted on farmer-owned, farmer-managed and farmer-controlled basis for sustainability and effective utilisation of the facilities.
In his remarks, the chairman of the WUAS, Alhaji Shu’aibu Kirya, revealed that the rehabilitation and handover of the rehabilitated irrigation sectors would bring more wealth to the area in particular and the state in general.
