FG extols Bingham University’s milestones

The federal government has extolled Bingham University, Karu, for recording many milestones since its inception, especially its dedication and hard work in nurturing and guiding academic accomplishments of its students.

The Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC) Chris Maiyaki who stated this at the varsity’s 5th Combined Convocation Ceremony for the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions, in Karu recently, said: “It is heartwarming that in 19 years the university has weathered several storms and stayed the same on the course of academic growth and development with about 80 programmes being offered in 15 faculties and a student population of about 9,000 at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. This is a noble feat considering the obvious challenges of funding and open sponsorship.”

Represented by John Mairafi, the NUC boss was also pleased that Bingham University has truly kicked into the recently-launched Core Curriculum, a new academic standard now fully at its implementation stage, which for the first time allows expected institutions to complete 30 per cent of its content.

Prof. Ayuba said the values, which the varsity stands for are not just academic ideals but the foundation upon which the students should build their future endeavours.

“The world you are stepping into is one of both great opportunity and great challenge. It is a world in need of innovative thinkers, compassionate leaders, godly and dedicated individuals who are willing to contribute to the greater good.

“The education you have received here has equipped you with the tools and knowledge to navigate this complex landscape. Now, it is up to you to use these tools to forge a path of your own making, to embrace the challenges with resilience, and to seize the opportunities with courage,” he said.

Prof. Ayuba noted that 1602 undergraduates and 615 postgraduate students were found worthy in both character and learning to be awarded first degree in various disciplines and masters and PhDs for which they were trained in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.

He gave the breakdown of the classes of degree as 57 First Class, 519 Second Class Upper, 576 Second Class Lower, 179 Third Class, 9 Pass degree and 262 Unclassified (MBBS), making it a total of 1602.

For postgraduate, a total of 615 will be graduating, with 41 PhDs, 155 Academic Masters, 298 Professional Masters and 121 Postgraduate Diploma.

While congratulating the graduates, the VC urged them to remember that the journey ahead will not always be easy, but it will be filled with moments of triumph, learning, and growth.

“Embrace these moments with the same enthusiasm and determination that brought you to this day. And always remember that you are not alone, your university family is here to support you, cheer you on, and celebrate your successes.

“As you move forward, strive not only for personal success but also for a meaningful impact on the world around you. Use your knowledge, skills, and values to contribute positively to society, to inspire others, and to make a difference,” he said.

Meanwhile, the varsity honoured its first Emeritus Professor, Yakubu Mela Alhasan, for his invaluable contributions to academic excellence, mentorship, research and community impact spanning over 30 years as a professor.

Speaking, the special guest of honour, General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd), told the graduating students that graduating from university is a moment when they transition from students to graduates, ready to embark on the next chapter of their lives.

“As you step out into the world, I encourage you to carry with you the values you have cultivated during your time, fear of God, integrity, perseverance and curiosity,” he said.
