FG earmarks N112bn to safeguard schools in 3 years

The federal government has allocated over N112 billion to ensure the safety and inclusivity of schools over the next three years.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, stated this in a statement issued in Abuja to mark the 2024 World Children’s Day, themed “Advancing Children’s Rights for a Sustainable Future.”

The global day, celebrated annually on November 20, commemorates the adoption of the UN Declaration and Convention on Children’s Rights in 1959 and 1989, respectively.

The funds, sourced through the National Plan for Financing Safe Schools, aim to protect learning environments, ensuring they remain safe and inclusive for all children.

The minister emphasised the government’s commitment to creating a secure space where children can access education and healthcare, and live free from harm.

“Through the National Plan for Financing Safe Schools, more than N112 billion has been allocated to safeguard learning environments over the next three years, ensuring that schools remain safe and inclusive spaces for all children,” she said.

She noted progress made in protecting the rights of children in the country, saying the Child Rights Act (CRA 2003) had been domesticated in the 36 states and the FCT.

She also underscored Nigeria’s legislative and policy efforts to combat child labour, trafficking, harmful cultural practices, and barriers to inclusive education.

The minister urged stakeholders to prioritise these issues, stating “Every child represents our collective future. Let us create a society where children’s rights are not only protected but celebrated as the foundation of a sustainable and prosperous future.”
