The Federal Government of Nigeria has directed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), to increase the digital identity enrolment of Nigerians from 500,000 monthly to 2.5million.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, issued the directive after he was briefed by the management team of NIMC on their activities, following the final transfer of the supervision of the commission to the ministry, a statement from the ministry said on Wednesday.
Pantami noted that though there had been a considerable increase in enrolments in the last few years, there was still a need to raise the bar even higher by ensuring that the enrolment rate is 5 times the current rate.
“This is imperative because, the National Identity Number (NIN) will soon be made mandatory for accessing government services and interventions”, the minister said.
He also directed the commission to interface more with citizens and run awareness campaigns on all media channels and in Nigerian languages to encourage citizens to obtain their digital identity.
