FG committed to tackle unemployment in Nigeria – Minister

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to launching and implementing targeted youth employment programmes to tackle unemployment in the country.

Dr Jamila Bio Ibrahim, Minister of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, announced this during the commemoration of the 2024 World Youth Skills Day, themed “Youth Skills For Peace & Development,” at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

In her keynote address, Dr Ibrahim highlighted the Ministry’s proactive approach to addressing youth unemployment.

She said the Ministry had developed programmes specifically designed to bridge the employment gap among the rapidly growing youth population, providing meaningful opportunities for young people to enter the workforce and contribute to the nation’s economy.

Dr Ibrahim emphasised the issue of escalating youth unemployment and underscored the proactive approach adopted by the Ministry to address it.

“As a part of its core mandate, the Ministry recently orchestrated an extensive and meticulously planned capacity-building programmes specifically tailored to the fashion design and tailoring business sectors.

“This multifaceted initiative also involved the establishment and furnishing of a cutting-edge tailoring hub located within the premises of the National Youth Development Centre in Odeomu, Osun State,” she said.

Dr Ibrahim noted that millions of young people globally are unemployed or underemployed, particularly in developing countries.

She emphasised that the 2024 World Youth Skills Day aims to create synergy among key players in youth development, fostering enthusiasm for skill acquisition and entrepreneurship in Nigeria.

Mr Olawande Ayodele, Minister of State for Youth Development, reinforced the government’s resolve to equip youth with vital skills for enhanced employability.

He emphasised the importance of job fairs, advocating for their promotion alongside trade fairs to boost skill acquisition.
