Female hip hop artistes making waves in Hausa music

Records show that since the advent of Hausa hip hop songs in the late 80s through the early 90s, the sector has been dominated by males.

Weekend Magazine gathered that Hausa hip hop music started with individuals and groups’ passion for rapping, and gradually evolved. Groups like the K-riders and B-group began what is known today as Hausa hip hop music.

With time, interested artistes began to key in and then, the music became a very strong sector that produced big names in the entertainment industry such as Hafeez; Buba Barnabas Luka known as Classiq; Panshak Zamani aka Ice Prince; Musa Akilah aka Morell; and DJ Ab, among other prominent artistes making waves within and outside the shores of Nigeria.

As the trend continued, female artistes began to emerge as rappers and what started as a mere trial became a strong force in the music industry as many young talented female artistes took to the challenge and are currently doing well, especially as rappers and entertainers.

One of such young promising female rappers is Queen of Hausa Hip Hop Music who goes by the stage name ‘Lil Pee’. She is from Taraba State and was born on the 8th of January 1997.

Her real name is Promise Bitrus Emmanuel. The young artiste adopted the name ‘Lil’ because she started rapping at a very tender age.

The young singer said she started professionally as a rapper after being motivated by the likes of Hausa hip hop artists like Dj Ab, Morell, among others.

The rapper is always a number one in shows and awards event which has made her own a legion of fans for her Nicky Minaj-like performance. She has a record of collaborating with the likes of Boc, Teeswagz, Kaits, Hazy D Star and famous Jzat popularly known as Bokan Taraba. She is Mumuye by tribe and can also speak Hausa and English languages.

Another female Hausa rapper making waves is Hadiza Ya’u, known in the entertainment sector as Haddy Rapia. The young Hausa artiste claims to be the first female Hausa rapper.

Rapia’s ability to control the crowd when she has the microphone has been described as very professional. Her lyrics always tries to address societal issues.

Similarly, Lagos-based Hausa rapper Falaq Al-amin is a Kaduna-born rapper, singer, songwriter and model who relocated to Lagos for the purpose of making her dream of becoming a world known music star a reality. She ventured into rapping after acquiring a degree in Agriculture from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. In collaboration with her management (Aboki Boy Entertainment),  Falaq released her major single ‘Haba dai,’ in 2018 which gained the attention of promoters and eventually sparked up interviews with major radio and TV stations. She soon became the first female rapper from Northern Nigeria to be hosted at Radio Nigeria and the MTVBase official Naija Top Ten freestyle session. The music star later released the track ‘Ba Wasa’ which premiered on Radio France International. She has been referred to as the most interesting female rapper to watch out for. 

Aisha Mufeedah is another hip-hop rapper taking the stage by storm. Born in the year 1999, and goes by the stage name Princess Aisha Mufeedah, she is a singer, actress and songwriter. She makes most of her music in the Hausa Language.

The young rapper was born in Maiduguri and was brought up in Abuja. She started making her music when she was 16 years old, and was awarded the most promising Northern female hip hop act (rapper), CAFE, 2016/17.

However, the rapper recently joined the famous TV series ‘Kwana Casa’in’ as a replacement for the character Salma.

Joining the bandwagon of female hip hop artistes recently is actress Safiya Yusuf aka Safaa. Born on the 25th of June 2000, the 22-year-old actress is among upcoming artistes making wave in the Hausa film industry with her role in ‘Kwana casa’in’. She is regarded as one of the few lucky artistes to have made a mark within a short period. Safari auditioned for the Arewa24 TV series ‘Kwana Casa’in’ at the age of 18.

The actress dumped acting for rapping after her leaked nude cost her a role. She left the film industry and recently released her hit single ‘Kwalelenka’. The song is currently trending.
