Fed Cup: Cash strapped Katsina Utd walked over in Abuja

Nigeria National League (NNL) side, Katsina United who are cash strapped were walked over yesterday in Abuja by Osun United in this year’s Federation Cup Round of 64.

The ‘Chanji boys’ who are currently leading Group A2 in the 2023 NNL abridged season failed to honour their match as they were unable to raise funds for the trip  to Abuja.

The development didn’t come to many as a surprise as the Katsina State owned club is said to have resorted to borrowing to prosecute matches in the NNL.

A day before yesterday’s walk over, an official of the club confided in our reporter that only a miracle would take them to Abuja.

“Unless a miracle happens, I am not sure we are going to honour our match with Osun United. We don’t have money. Most times when we travel, we borrow.

“We have submitted our budget to the state government but we are yet to get any favourable response. Maybe when money is released, we would settle the debts we owe,” he said.

Daily Trust also gathered reliably that one of the players who is an in-law to a top government official usually loans money to the club to enable it prosecute its matches.

One of the coaches who confirmed this situation said the player who is not a regular in the team has been of immense help to the distressed club.
