Work has commenced at four locations earmarked for new pedestrian bridges in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The locations are in Kugbo, Nyanya Park, Kitiwe Street behind Wuse Market and Arab Contractors Road Junction, Kubwa.
The four new bridges were awarded under the 2018 FCT Budget to M/S Adakhat Nig Ltd for Kugbo; Emtag Nig Ltd for Nyanya Park; Gozcon Investment Ltd for Kitiwe Street and Anarock Global Services Ltd for Arab Contractors road junction.
While briefing journalists in Abuja, the Secretary, FCT Transportation Secretariat, Comrade Kayode Opeifa expressed satisfaction with the measures put in place to ensure free flow of traffic through the construction of the bridges.
He observed that the traffic gridlock witnessed along AYA–Nyanya route in the last few days was as a result of the remediation works embarked upon by the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
The officials of FERMA had cut off some failed portions of the road for routine repairs but left the portions unfinished for days thereby obstructing free flow of traffic along the express way.
Opeifa, however, assured the road users that the secretariat had put in place adequate measures to ensure free flow of traffic in all the locations where new pedestrian bridges are being constructed.
The Kitiwe street bridge is to serve as link between the street and Wuse Market, while the bridge at Nyanya, located opposite the NNPC filing station is to link commuters wishing to cross from the filling station side of the road to new Nyanya Park.
The construction of the four new pedestrian bridges is expected to be completed in 32 weeks from the date the contractors mobilised to the site.
