FCT to focus more on child rights policies

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCT) will, in line with the Renewed Hope Initiative of the present administration, continue to promote policies that protect the children’s rights to education and other necessities of life.

The Mandate Secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, made the promise at the international school quiz, organised by an NGO, African Scholars Care Initiative in Collaboration with the secretariat.

The Mandate Secretary, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, of the secretariat, Alhaji Kolawole Rabiu, said the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, established the secretariat in order to give women, and especially Nigerian children, the recognition they deserve.

According to the Permanent Secretary, the International Day of the African Child was initiated by the Organization of African Unity (OAU) now known as the African Union in 1991 to celebrate the children who took to the street in Soweto in 1976 to fight for their right to better education for black children in South Africa during apartheid.

Alhaji Kolawole emphasized the importance of children as the Africa’s greatest asset, saying with the right education and skills, they will contribute to the growth and development of Nigeria and Africa at large.

The Country Director, Nutritional International, Dr Osita Okonkwo, in his Paper titled: The Roles of Nutrition in Education,” noted that a healthy mind is the key to overall health and wellbeing of an individual and this includes emotional, psychological and social wellbeing.
