The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, has ordered the arrest and prosecution of traffic offenders.

Bello who made this known during the flag-off of the Ministerial Action Against Traffic Violation project in the FCT, stressed that the action was intended to ensure compliance with traffic rules and regulations on FCT roads.

According to a statement by the minister’s spokesman, Mr Anthony Ogunleye, traffic lights and other road markings are intended to safeguard the lives of road users and ensure smooth and efficient flow of traffic.

Mr Ogunleye said, “As the population of the city expands, it has been observed that many road users do not understand many traffic rules and regulations and invariably put their lives and the lives of other road users in jeopardy.”

The “issue of traffic management has been of great concern to him (minister), the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Commissioner of Police and the people in our health facilities because each time there is an accident, our system gets overstretched,” he said.

Bello, therefore, urged FRSC, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the police to key into the programme with commitment to ensure its success.

The minister launched the programme at the traffic intersection off Ahmadu Bello Way by Ralph Shodeinde Street at the Central Business District, Abuja, on Thursday.

The Corps Marshal of FRSC who was represented by Deputy Corps Marshal Kayode Fanola, assured the commitment of the FRSC to ensuring the success of the ministerial action and called for the availability of mobile courts.
