The Federal Capital Territory-Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) said it has moved to harmonise taxes and levies to end the complaints of multiple payments by taxpayers.
Daily Trust reports that scores of Micro, Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) in the FCT have complained about multiple taxes and levies that include signage, permit and tenement.

The latest move to harmonise the taxes was announced by the Executive Chairman of FCT-IRS, Mr Abdullahi Attah, at a stakeholders’ retreat in Lagos on Tuesday, the agency said.
The retreat themed: “Towards a Harmonised Revenue Management Framework in the FCT”, was to seek inputs from the public on the best strategies.
Mr Attah also said the harmonised system was to boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in the FCT.
He said, “The area councils as we know are autonomous and self-governing. However, we all form part of the FCT Administration, with a focus on providing services to indigenes and residents of the territory.
“The issue, therefore, is how best to work together within the existing governance system in the FCT and ensure that we are able to pool resources, utilise existing systems, knowhow and even data, to enable us maximise the revenue generation potentials of the FCT-IRS.”
The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Olusade Adesola, acknowledged that multiple tax issues had been raised in the FCT, which he said had affected the ease of doing business.
Malam Bello said, “We are all aware of the challenges associated with claims over rights of revenue collection in the FCT and attendant issues of multiple taxes.”
