The senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Philip Tanimu Aduda, has said his determination to canvass for administrative and political structure for the six area councils of the territory was because they were still being run by extant laws of Niger State. Speaking during a telephone interview with our reporter over the weekend, Aduda noted that in line with Section 7 (1)(5) of the 1999 Constitution as amended, every state of the federation has enacted laws which provide for the establishment, structure, composition, finance and functions of local government councils.
According to him, such laws have not been enacted by the National Assembly for the six area councils – Abaji, Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali and Bwari.
“As I am talking to you right now, the bill, which includes other related matters, has passed through the second reading in the Senate.
My distinguished colleagues are fully in support of the bill,” he said.
Aduda noted that, to enable the area councils feel the impact of democratic existence, it is the responsibility of the National Assembly to enact laws for the territory as provided under Section 299 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
