The Chairman of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, has berated the area council chairmen for handling welfare of the Local Education Authority (LEA) primary school teachers in the territory with levity.
Shafas spoke during the 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Multipurpose Co-operative Society of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), held at Government Secondary School (GSS), Gwagwalada on Saturday.
He said despite the efforts of the teachers to impact knowledge on the pupils, payment of their salaries has been epileptic.
“Within late last year to this year, the salaries of teachers in the primary school section had been epileptic. And why I said it’s epileptic? the JAAC will be held after two weeks, but teachers can’t access their salaries, which is pathetic,” he said.
He said the area council chairmen have been running away from their responsibilities over teachers’ welfare, saying the council has refused to have an interface with the union when teachers tender their demands to them.
“The area council chairmen only recognise us when we embark on strike action, that is when they will remember that primary teachers exist. And part from this, council chairmen were among those that employed the teachers into the system. And why now running away from their responsibilities? He asked.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Multipurpose Co-operative society of the FCT NUT, Comrade Mahmud Ameh Enemakwu, said the society had achieved a lot including 60 per cent ownership of 33KVA transformer for stability of power supply gearing towards operational efficiency.
