Conducting members of the Senate Committee on FCT round the project, the Executive Secretary of the FCDA, Engr Shehu Hadi, said the FCT Administration (FCTA) had fully funded the contractor handling the phase one while processes for approval of the second phase were on top gear.

Hadi explained that the FCTA and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) were in charge of facilitating the payment processes, hence that there was no cause for alarm.

He said, “Knowing fully well that sessions are going on, we have made effort on how we can as much as practicable make it seamless without disrupting daily legislative conduct.”

Reacting, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on FCT, Smart Adeyemi, asked the administration to take proactive practical steps to source the required funds for the completion of the renovation of the complex.

He said a further delay in mobilising manpower and resources for the completion of the complex would be tantamount to threat to legislative duties and democracy.

Admitting that the FCT was going through the challenge of influx of people, Adeyemi advised the administration to keep expanding infrastructure to meet the ever increasing population.

While commending the administration for its foresight in designing a 565-capacity chamber, he said, “We are having 109 (senators) now. This may not always be the case. Creation of more senatorial zones and more geopolitical zones may emerge in the next 10 to 20 years. Our concern is to leave this place better than we met it.”
