Crop Productivity Enhancement expert with Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) Malam Idris Saidu Garko has described the use of powerful herbicides such as Paraquat to hasten harvest of crops and other cereals by some farmers as dangerous to health.
He stated this while speaking to farmers during the operational innovation platform meeting organized under the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project.
The project is being implemented by SAA with funding from Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and Lives and Livelihood Fund (LLF).
Malam Garko stated that it is part of the project to educate farmers on best agricultural practices as well as issues related to agricultural financing for a sustainable agricultural business.
He added that, for farmers to gain maximum benefit from agri-business there is a need for them to be educated on safest operational processes and stopping the use of the powerful herbicide should be taken seriously.
A participant from Dawakin Kudu LGA, Malam Sai’du Usman revealed that the project has changed farmers’ perception on agriculture as many have now taken farming not just for food consumption but also as an independent business entity.
