Farmers have been advised to adopt the complementary use of organic and inorganic fertilizer in the country in order to attain increased crop yields, income boost and attain food security and economic prosperity for Nigeria.
Executive Secretary, Fertilizer Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN), Alhaji Ahmed Rabiu Kwa gave the advise in an interview with newsmen in Kaduna on Wednesday.
He said, the complementary use of both fertilizers is highly beneficial and therefore recommended for farmers.
He stressed that the importance of complementary use of organic with inorganic fertilizer cannot be overemphasized.
According to him, “A combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers will greatly provide the nutrient needs of crops and organic fertilizer supplies some nutrients, helps regulate their release to crops, and improves the physical condition and properties of soils, while inorganic fertilizer serves as the major source of higher quantities of the major plant nutrients that have been removed by seasonal cropping.
“The economic and environmental benefits of the complementary application of both sources of nutrients have been proven through systematic on-farm research and technology development both locally and internationally, and therefore farmers should adopt the complimentary use of organic and inorganic fertilizers for optimum crop yields.”
