Farmer bags 1-yr imprisonment for killing cow in Ondo

A 25-year-old farmer, Ojo Michael, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment by an Akure magistrate court for killing a cow belonging to one Abubakar Kareem.

Michael was arraigned for allegedly using a Dane gun to kill the cow, valued at N130,000, and then took it away.

Police prosecutor, Sergeant Olusola Omolade told the court that the defendant committed the offence on December 20, 2020, at about 11 am at Yakubu camp in Ayede-Ogbese, Ondo state.

The offence, according to the prosecutor, contravened section 290(9), 450 and 516 of the criminal code cap 37 Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.

The defendant pleaded guilty to the offence when the charge was read to him.

He confessed that he killed the cow after it destroyed his farm, according to the defendant’s statement to the police.

The prosecutor prayed the court to remand the defendant at the Olokuta Custodial Centre in Akure.

In her judgment, Magistrate B.O Ojo sentenced the defendant to one-year imprisonment with the option of N50,000 fine.

She also ordered the payment of N130,000 for the cow.
