‘Fake’ police inspector arrested for extortion

Operatives of the Ogun Police Command have arrested a 38-year-old man, Akinyemi Thomas for impersonating a police inspector to extort unsuspecting members of the public.

The suspect was arrested while policemen attached to Sagamu divisional headquarters were on routine patrol.

The team led by the DPO, CSP Godwin Idehai, had sighted the suspect in full police camouflage uniform under a bridge along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway.

Spokesman of the police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told newsmen that his conduct raised the suspicion of the policemen who then stopped to question him. 

According to him, immediately the patrol vehicle stopped, the suspect took to his heels, but the operatives chased and apprehended him.

“On interrogation, he confessed being a dismissed policeman but using the uniform to extort unsuspecting members of the public,” he said.

Oyeyemi said the uniform and police warrant card were recovered, saying, investigation into the matter has commenced.
