Fairwork is set to launch its first report on the working conditions of platform workers in Nigeria on 31 March 2023.

In a statement on Saturday, it said the report evaluates the working conditions of eight digital labour platforms against five global principles of Fairwork, including fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation.

Each platform operating in Nigeria (including Glovo, Lagos Ride, Kwik, Gokada, Uber, Bolt, Bolt Food, and Jumia Food) were scored against all five principles to assess whether they provide basic labour standards like minimum wage, mitigation practices against risks, provision of due process and so forth.

The report draws on data collected from August to December 2022 from digital platform workers and managers in Lagos, Nigeria.

Fairwork Nigeria is supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (GIZ).

In recent years, Nigeria has witnessed a rapid growth of the platform economy and its associated employment opportunities for thousands of its citizens. However, existing labour laws do not adequately protect these workers, who work mainly with ride-hailing and delivery platforms.

Following the release of the Fairwork Observatory Nigeria report last year, the Fairwork Nigeria report 2022/23 will identify if there have been any changes in the situation of platform workers beyond just ride-hailing platforms.

“The report intends to continue the national conversation on improving working conditions for all platform workers while harnessing the potential of these platforms to create decent jobs.

“Fairwork is a global project based at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford and the WZB Berlin Social Science Centre. Made up of a global network of researchers, Fairwork evaluates digital platforms’ working conditions and ranks them based on five principles of Fairwork. Globally, Fairwork collaborates closely with workers, platforms, advocates, and policymakers to envision and build a fairer future of work. Fairwork Nigeria is anchored by the Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, in Lagos Nigeria.”

The report will be launched online on Friday, 31 March 2023 with an expert panel and live audience Q&A.
