In this interview, Oluwaseun discusses her creative process, design philosophy, and her vision for the future of Nigerian fashion. With her latest collection, “Crystal Luxury,” she continues to push boundaries and shape the African fashion landscape.
Q: What is your educational background and qualifications?
I am a graduate of Lagos State University with a degree in Radio and Television Broadcasting (B.Sc.). Despite my academic background, my true passion and expertise lie in the field of fashion.
Q: What influenced your decision to enter the world of fashion?
I have always had a love for fashion from a young age. I started sewing during a university strike and enrolled myself in a fashion school. My aim was to support my family, and my interest in fashion design grew from there. My academic background in broadcasting has also helped me publicize my brand without compromising my career as a fashion designer.
Q: Wonderchildforkids was established in 2016. How has the journey been so far?
It has been an interesting and fulfilling journey, filled with highs and lows. Being a fashion designer comes with its challenges, but celebrating the victories, no matter how small, has been crucial. I have faced staff and everyday business challenges, but overcoming each hurdle has been rewarding.
Q: What sets you apart from other fashion designers?
My unique designs, timely delivery to customer, and passion for creating affordable yet quality dresses distinguish me from others.
Q: What challenges do you encounter as a fashion designer?
Initially, starting as an online shop, finding a suitable location for my physical store was challenging. Working with celebrities or social media influencers can also be difficult, as they sometimes expect free outfits or delayed returns. Dealing with people who fail to credit my designs on social media is demoralizing, but a common challenge.
Q: What training did you undergo before venturing into this line of business?
Besides learning from a local store in Yaba market, Tejuosho, I pursued several fashion courses online and self-taught on platforms like YouTube and Pinterest. I also attended Kent School of Fashion in the UK to enhance my skills in shirt design, cutting-edge fashion design, and digital pattern cutting.
Q: Do you see yourself ever quitting fashion and returning to broadcasting?
While I have considered returning to broadcasting in the past, my passion for fashion design has grown stronger over time. I no longer have the appetite for a white-collar job and find fulfillment in pursuing my passion.
Q: Do you have a physical store?
Yes, I have two physical stores in Lagos State.
Q: What is your staff’s strength, and how do you manage them to ensure they give their best?
A: I have a social media manager and other staff members. Managing them involves setting and maintaining standards, supervising outfit production, and occasionally sewing myself to meet demand.
Q: What are some of the sacrifices you have made for your career success?
I would say my social life. It has taken a back seat as my career demands most of my time. I rarely attend parties because I’m usually in my office. Sacrificing my social life has been worthwhile to prioritize my career.
Q: Where do you draw inspiration for your designs?
I constantly engage in deep thinking and draw inspiration from cartoons. Watching cartoons character really help my creativity in designing making exceptional collections.
Q: What is your relationship with Nigerian celebrities?
I have a good relationship with several Nigerian celebrities, and I’ve had the privilege of styling both them and their children for various occasions. Some of the celebrities I’ve worked with include Mercy Johnson Okojie, Osas Ighodaro, Tana Adelana, and Darasimi, among others.
Q: How would you describe your personality?
I am easy-going but disciplined and determined to achieve my goals. I try not to stress over minor issues and enjoy a balance of hard work, socializing, and relaxation.
Q: Where do you see yourself in future?
I envision expanding the [Wonderchildforkids] brand into other countries with the goal of increasing its global presence and contributing to the growth of the fashion sector worldwide. My commitment extends to creating job opportunities, offering internships, and imparting essential skills to aspiring fashion designers.
Q: What is your new collection “Crystal Luxury” all about?
The “Crystal Luxury” collection is all about elegance, sophistication, and timeless charm in children’s fashion. It features breathtaking designs crafted with meticulous attention to detail, creating pieces that exude luxury and class. Each outfit in this collection is a celebration of individuality and imagination, inviting children to embrace their unique style while indulging in the magic of luxury fashion.
Q: What advice would you give to women aspiring to own a business?
I would advise them to embrace challenges as part of the journey and give their all to their passion. Setting goals, being tenacious, and not rushing to see results are essential for success.
