Experts mull initiative for cervical cancer elimination in North-East zone

Preparations are in top gear by experts for advocacy and initiatives towards the elimination of cervical cancer in the North-East geopolitical zone of the country.

President of the Gynecologic Oncology Society of Nigeria (GOSON), Prof. Bala Audu, made the disclosure yesterday in Abuja, during a meeting with other experts, at the sidelines of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) validation meeting on the National Cancer control strategic plan 2023-2027.

The experts in attendance include Dr. Adamu Alhassan Umar, President of the Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) and Dr. Ishak Lawal, Executive Director of End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI).

The experts brainstormed on the tripartite collaboration to support the Eliminate Cervical Cancer Initiative in the North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria in line with the WHO’s cervical cancer elimination strategy.

Prof Audu who is also the pioneer vice chancellor of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, Bauchi State said that the advocacy has reached an advanced stage with the North-East Development Commission and for the University of Miami, United States of America to support the project. 

He said, “A collaboration between the three organisations to provide technical and logistics support for planning and implementation of the program is a step in the right direction towards achieving the cervical cancer elimination targets in Nigeria.”

Dr. Ishak Lawal, Executive Director of End Cervical Cancer Nigeria Initiative (ECCNI) said the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in the University of Miami was designated as a World Health Organisation (WHO) collaboration centre for elimination of cervical cancer in 2021.

He said the University of Miami has since been collaborating with global partners to generate solutions critical to achieving the cervical cancer elimination targets.
