The former Deputy Controller General of Prisons, Dr.Hassan Labo has called for the decongestion of the prisons across the federation.

He made the call during the Public Presentation and Launch of his book titled,”Prison Sector Reforms in Nigeria:Challenges and the Way Forward”.

Lado who decried the appalling state of Nigerian prisons said delay in prosecuting intimates and country’s justice system are factors responsible for prison congestion.

“Having worked with the Nigerian prisons Service for 23 years, I have really observed some
of the problems impeding the smooth operations of the Nigerian prisons. The major problem is overcrowding.

“Its not enough to identify the problem, we must take bold step in addressing this challenge. This is what inspired me to write the book”, he said.

On the way forward, the former prisons boss insisted that the prisons should be decongested so that funds being provided for these prisoners will reduce the pressure on the prisons.

Earlier, the Comptroller General of Prisons, Jaafaru Ahmed commended the writer for the great work, adding that the book is apt.

He said the book is coming at a time when the federal government and the Nigerian Prisons Service are working to address decongestion in prisons across the country.

He applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for putting a mechanism in place to decongest prisons in the country.
