Ex Oyo court official jailed record 3rd time for fraud

A former deputy chief registrar of Oyo State High Court has been sentenced to three years in prison for fraud after issuing a dud cheque.

Mutiat Adio pleaded guilty to fresh charges on obtaining money by false pretext and issuing a dishonoured cheque.

Ibadan Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Friday announced the court ruling.

Adio is alleged to have obtained a 2000 model Pathfinder valued at N1.5million from a car dealership.

She told the dealer Fabunmi Samuel a cheque she issued him would clear on presenting it at her bank.

She took possession of the SUV but the cheque was dishonoured within three months for insufficient funds.

She pleaded not guilty at her first arraignment in January 2018.

The later changed her plea to guilty after a plea bargain agreement that led to the charges being amended, EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Iwujare, told a briefing in Ibadan on Monday.

The court pronounced her guilty.

The Court also ordered her to restitute to Samuel of Fatai Olanrewaju Motors N500,000 in addition to N1 million she had previously paid in restitution of the victim.

With  the latest development, Adio completes a hat-trick of convictions having previously been jailed twice for fraud.

On May 18, 2018, she was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for obtaining N9.2 million from one Abiodun Olonade, a Nigerian resident in Ireland, by false pretext.

Also, on March 6, 2020 she was convicted and sentenced to five years in prison for stealing N22.3 million from Guaranty Trust Bank.
