Former Minister of Works Dr Hassan Lawal died yesterday at the age of 64.
He was buried in his home town, at the Kofar Hausa cementry in Keffi local government area of Nasarawa State.
Family sources said the late Hassan Lawal died at the Turkish Hospital, Abuja about 4:30am.
He was survived by two wives and six children.
Several dignitaries, including representatives of President Muhammadu Buhari led by Minister of State for Environment Usman Jibrin, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura and other sympathisers witnessed the funeral prayer led the Chief Imam of Keffi Central Mosque, Sheikh Muhammed Auwal.
The late Hassan Lawal was born in 1954 and served under late President Umaru Yar’adua as Minister of Labour and Productivity. He had earlier worked as a magistrate, as an NNPC staff, and as chairman of Nigeria Shippers Council, among others.
Speaking to newsmen at the burial ground, the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammad Buhari on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said, “To President Buhari, this is a deep personal loss. It is the loss of a very strong pillar. The late Dr Hassan had made huge sacrifices at various junctures in his political life. The president prays that Allah will accept his soul and forgive his sins.”
On his part, Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura said, “Today is a day of grief to the people of Nasarawa State for the loss of one of our illustrious sons, but our consolation lies in the fact that Dr. Hassan Lawal lived a worthwhile life that benefited the people of Nasarawa State.”
Several dignitaries attended the burial, including General Aliyu Gusau (rtd), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, General Abdullahi Aboki (rtd), Alhaji Ibrahim Mantu, Rep Abdulmumuni Jibrin, and Rep Jonathan Gaza.
