A former member of the House of Representatives from Gombe State, Hajiya Fatima Binta Bello, has awarded scholarship worth N10.8 million to 540 indigent students from four LGAs of Gombe South Senatorial District.

Speaking in Gombe at the maiden edition of the scholarship award scheme tagged ‘Fatima-Binta Bello Trust Fund Foundation on Education and Girl-Child Upliftment’, the ex-lawmaker said the beneficiaries were picked from Balanga, Billiri, Kaltungo and Shongom LGAs.

Binta Bello, who represented Kaltungo/Shongom Federal Constituency at the National Assembly from 2011 to 2019, presented a cheque of N20,000 each to the benefitting students.

She said the decision to launch the scheme was informed by her passion for education and also to enhance the educational standard in Tangale/Waja communities in the state.

According to her, the scholarship would assist beneficiaries who were predominantly from the less privileged background to pursue their education, reach their potentials in order to contribute to the development of the state.

While calling on the students to be good ambassadors of Tangale/Waja, she urged other philanthropists from Gombe South to assist students, particularly those from less privileged families.

In a remark, the National President of Tangale/Waja Students Association, Joffery Jona, appreciated the former lawmaker for the gesture which he described as timely considering COVID-19 hardship which affected the country’s economy.

He also challenged the students not to take education alone as source of priority but also venture into business venture that would make their lives better.
