Ex-Flying Eagles star, Lawal targets Rwanda FedCup Cup with AS Kigali

A former Nigerian junior international, Abubakar Lawal, has set his sight on winning the Rwandan Football Federation Cup (Peace Cup) with AS Kigali FC as they square up with giants APR FC in Tuesday’s finals.

In a chat with Daily Trust ahead of the potentially explosive clash, the former Kano Pillars and Wikki Tourists fleet-footed striker said their opponents are the favourites in the contest but AS Kigali are unperturbed.

He said they are motivated to win because victory against APR will hand AS Kigali a Confederation Cup ticket.

“The Primus National League has just ended. My club, AS Kigali finished in third position but we are going to play the finals of the Rwanda Football Federation Cup, that is the Peace Cup for men against APR FC on Tuesday.

“If we emerge champions, we would return to the continent to compete in the Confederation Cup. Our opponents are the reigning national league champions so they are a tough side but we are ready to fight for the trophy.

“There is so much to play for so I am ready to contribute my quota to the victory we are all praying for come Tuesday,” he said.

Lawal who was an integral member of the Flying Eagles under Manu Garba ended the current league season in Rwanda with eight goals and 10 assists.

Although some top clubs in Africa and Europe have shown interest in the lanky forward, he said he is focused on helping his club to end the season with a trophy.

The Sokoto born player said “It is a good thing for one to be the interest of other clubs but it pays to do one thing at a time. My mind right now is on the finals on Tuesday.”
