Ex-convict nabbed with guns bought from Benin Republic

Detectives from the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos State, have arrested a 36-year-old suspected cultist, Ibrahim Babatunde, with two locally made pistols and two rounds of ammunition.

The suspect, who claimed to be a member of Eiye confraternity, was arrested at Ijoko-Ota in Ogun State by the Dragon Squad 2 while preparing for a cult war with a rival group.

The suspect, in his confessional statement, admitted owning one of the guns which he claimed to have been bought from Cotonou, in Benin Republic for N40,000.

“The other gun found on me belongs to a friend of mine. I bought my own for N40,000 in Benin Republic. It was my friend who helped me to buy it.

“I have never used it. I bought it to protect myself and not to kill anyone,” he said at the headquarters of Zone 2, Onikan where he was paraded.

Addressing newsmen on the arrest, spokesman of Zone 2, SP Ummar Ayuba, said his arrest was through intelligence gathered by the Assistant Inspector General of Police concerning a notorious suspected member of Eiye confraternity who had been terrorising the Ijoko-Ota and Sango axis of Ogun State.

Ayuba said following the reports of the activities of the cult group, the AIG assigned the Officer in-Charge of Dragon Squad 2, DSP Adeyemi Akeem and his team to discreetly carry out the operation.

“On October 10, 2024 at about 0439hrs, one suspect, Ibrahim Babatunde, an ex-convict, was arrested during a raid on the hideout along Ijagba Area of Sango-Ota, Ogun State.

“Two locally made single-barrel pistols and two live cartridges were recovered from him which he claimed were bought for N80,000 each from the Benin Republic.

“The suspect confessed to be a member of the Eiye confraternity. Efforts are being made to arrest the fleeing suspects,” Ayuba said.
