Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested an ex-convict for armed robbery two days after he was released from prison in the state.
The suspect, John Agbontean, 35, who regained freedom from Oko Prison on December 19, was arrested on December 22, 2024 at a robbery scene.
The Edo State command’s spokesman, SP Moses Yamu, said the suspect was arrested following a distress call that armed robbers were operating at Restoration Gospel Ministry, situated at No. 11 Oviasuyi Street off Ogiemwenke in Benin-City.
He said operatives of Saint Saviour Police Division mobilised to the scene and arrested the suspect with a gun while attempting to rob the church.
“Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to being an ex-convict who regained his freedom from Oko Prison, Benin-City on December 19, 2024.
Yamu said the suspect and his accomplice, one Ola whose surname is unknown now at large, conspired to rob the church of its end-of-year harvest thanksgiving collection.
