Senate President Ahmad Lawan says political, ethnic and religious sentiments make governance tough in Nigeria.

Lawan stated this in Abuja on Tuesday while delivering a lecture at the National Defence College Course 29 Programme.

“Unfortunately, almost every issue you bring in Nigeria would rather have or would be given either political, ethnic, geo-political or religious coloration.

“The national interest must override any other interest because it’s the interest of the majority of the people of the country. If we do that, chances are that we’ll always get it right.

He said though there was cordial working relationship between the executive and the legislature, the latter would not compromise on its oversight function.

He said the Nigerians should not be denied dividends of democracy because of fights between the two arms.

Lawan also said that the 2023 general elections would see a drastic reduction in electoral violence after the passage of the amended version of the Electoral Act in June this year by the National Assembly.
