The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) said it has set aside the sum of N1.5bn for the construction of drainages in five local government areas of Nasarawa State to mitigate flooding.
The National Project Coordinator, Dr. Salisu Dahiru, revealed this in an interview with our correspondent shortly after he inspected the ongoing drainage projects in Angwan Nugu and other parts of Lafia Local Government Area of the state.
Dr. Dahiru, who was represented by Water Resources Specialist of the NEWMAP head office, Abuja, Engineer Ayuba Anda, explained that NEWMAP, a World Bank-Assisted Project, was designed to address gully erosion and other forms of environmental degradation that had been affecting the inhabitants of the state.
According to him, the Nasarawa State Government under the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Sule, signed a subsidiary loan agreement with the federal government, affirming that the state government has taken ownership of the loan as well as ownership of the project.
