Enugu will continue to support FRSC for safety of citizens – Ugwuanyi

Enugu State Governor, Chief  Ifeanyi Ugwuany has said that his administration will continue to support the Federal Road Safety Corps for the safety of all the citizens in the state.
 
Governor  Ugwuanyi made the promise during the Flagging-off of the 2018 Ember Month Safety Campaign  on Thursday in Enugu.
 
The governor, who was represented by  his Senior Adviser on Special Duties Mr Uwakwe Azikiwe  said that state government would continue to make sure that all roads in the state were safe for road users.
 
He  appealed to  every road user to obey traffic rules as well as avoid taking drugs and alcohol while driving on the road, and advised  the citizens to always caution drivers who drive recklessly on the roads so as to arrive to their destination safely.
 
 The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi,  represented by Corps Commander, Rita Muonye said that the corps has resolved to use the media and all public enlightenment to educate road users on the need to be careful while driving on the road and not attach crashes to other causes or belief.
 
Oyeyemi urged road users to avoid driving with defective eyesight as the corps operational strategies lined up for the 2018 ember month campaign were to enforce safety on roads, and  called on all road safety stakeholders to cooperate in reducing the high number of crashes on Nigerian roads.
 
He said there was need for drivers to change from old number plate to new one, have highway codes and drivers Licence so as to have uniformity of the corpse Licensing scheme.
 
The Zonal Commanding Officer, Mr Samuel Obayemi,  represented by Deputy Commander Chinyere Nwagbaoso, said that the Enugu FRSC has resolved to achieve 15 per cent reduction on road crashes and 30 per cent fatality reduction.
 
Obayemi said that this was in line with Corps Corporate Strategic goals in 2018 aimed at the meeting the United Decade of Action 2020 and Global best practice.
 
The Enugu Sector Commander, Kalu Ogbonnaya said that the Sector’s focus in the 2018 ember month campaign were on overloading, over speed, tyre violation, reckless driving among others.
 
Ogbonnaya said that the Corps has already created mobile courts with magistrates for quick dispensation of judgment on roads’ offenders.
