Enoh declares 8th National Youth Games Open in Asaba

The Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, on Thursday declared open the 8th edition of the National Youth Games (NYG) in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Speaking at the opening ceremony which was held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, the Minister emphasised the importance of grassroots sports development in nurturing young talents and strengthening the country’s position in global sports.

“In today’s world, sports play a crucial role in creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy.

“This is why the current administration, under the leadership of His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), is committed to repositioning the sector for optimal performance in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Reflecting on the lessons learned from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralypic Games, Senator Enoh called for a renewed focus on grassroots development.

He stressed the need for a framework that goes beyond talent identification, to one that ensures comprehensive nurturing from the grassroots to elite levels of competition.

The Minister further commended the efforts of Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his continued support of grassroots sports, particularly at a time when hosting such a national event is challenging. Senator Enoh also expressed his appreciation to the governors of the participating states and the Federal Capital Territory for their unwavering support and sponsorship of their state delegations.

He called on athletes and officials to demonstrate the spirit of fair play, urging them to compete cleanly and abide by the rules.

“This year’s edition of the National Youth Games presents yet another opportunity to initiate the process of athlete development for the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and the setting of world records,” he added.

4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials are cleared to participate in this year’s Games.
