Engr. Uche Maxwell Ozele, Chairman, Environment Division, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Abuja Chapter, said that as a professional body, the division caters for the development of members through lectures, symposia and conferences on environmental issues.
He said: “Once in a year we hold this environment week lecture. The idea is to sensitise engineers who are environmentally biased and others on the need to begin to apply green idea into their operations and projects. We realised that if that is not done, the project in question, will not be sustainable. Therefore, the environmental week lecture is exclusively put in place to help engineers realise that in all their activities as engineers, they need to consider sustainability in their operations.”
He said that flooding and erosion were the results of the activities of human on the environment.
“That is one reason why we have such lecture at a time like this. In addition to that you will see that the theme of the lecture is centered on waste management through recycling and regulations. We realised that this is where engineers come in strictly. The equipments needed getting this waste into better form can only be provided by engineers,’’ he said.
Aside lectures on topical environmental issues presented by seasoned engineers, the event also witnessed the presentation of merit awards to engineers who have distinguished themselves in contributing to sustainable environment and environmental engineering.
