Engineers seek review of road reform bill to boost rural economy

The Nigerian Institution of Highway and Transportation Engineers (NIHTE) has called on the 10th National Assembly to revisit the road reform bill passed by the 8th and 9th assemblies.

The bill aims to enhance road networks and stimulate economic development in rural areas.

Speaking at the 2024 International Conference and Annual General Meeting in Abuja, NIHTE National Chairman, Engr. Saidu Hassan emphasised the critical role of roads, highways, and transportation systems in Nigeria’s economy.

“Roads and highways are the arteries of our economy, facilitating the movement of goods, services, and people. Yet, our road networks face challenges such as inadequate funding, outdated infrastructure, insufficient skilled personnel, and poor maintenance,” Hassan said.

He urged federal lawmakers to prioritise a comprehensive review of the road sector, addressing issues like funding, regulations, and maintenance.

The President and Chairman in Council of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Engr. Margaret Aina Oguntala, called for deliberate government investment in rural road construction and maintenance.

She highlighted the importance of such efforts for transporting agricultural produce to urban areas, warning that continued neglect of rural roads could exacerbate food insecurity in the country.
