ENGIE Energy Access Nigeria has said it is completing a solar power mini grid project in Niger state that would connect about 700 households.
The Managing Director of ENGIE, Bankole Cardoso disclosed this at a press briefing where Finex International, announced a change in name to ENGIE Energy Access Nigeria (EEAN) in Lagos.
Cardoso said the firm is operating across 11 states and has completed a mini grid plant in Niger to provide 100 kilowatts (kw) of affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.
He said the firm had projected spending between N50 million and N200 million on each of the grid assets.
According to him, the firm would be completing 300 of such projects by 2025 in Nigeria and deploy a targeted number of 1,000 plants across Africa.
Fenix International started operations in Nigeria in 2018 as part of ENGIE integrating ambition to expand its footprint in Africa.
ENGIE Africa employs nearly 4,000 people and has 3.15 gigawatts of power generation capacity in operation or construction, impacting over 165,000 lives in Nigeria.
Cardoso said: “The name change is a result of ENGIE integrating Fenix with ENGIE Mobisol, another solar homes systems company; and mini grid provider, ENGIE PowerCorner under one entity with one name.
“This integration puts ENGIE Energy Access in a unique position as the only energy player offering end to end off-grid solutions with both solar homes systems and mini grids under one roof.”
Fenix, which was acquired by ENGIE in 2018, expanded its operations significantly in 2019. To date, it has sold more than 700,000 solar home systems that power 3.5 million people in rural communities across six countries.
