#EndSARS: Father demands N100m compensation over son’s killing

Father of a victim of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Osun State has demanded compensation of N100 million over the murder of his son.

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry set up by Osun State governor, Adegboyega Oyetola, on alleged brutality by policemen who served in the (SARS) unit has commenced its sitting in Osogbo, the state capital.

At the inaugural sitting, the panel started with the case of a businessman, Ismaila Rasheedi, allegedly killed by SARS operatives in Iwo, July 18, 2020, in a hotel.

The father of the deceased, Rasheedi Ayinla, said his son had N4million with him when he was killed, and that the SARS operatives took the money away.

The counsel to the family, Mr Fatai Ajani, demanded N100million compensation for the family to cater for the education of the five children and two wives of the deceased. He said one of the wives is pregnant.

The panel urged the petitioner to highlight how the family arrived at the N100million demand, supply the breakdown analysis of how the family would use the money to cater for the dependants of the deceased.

It said “This panel is not a regular court of law where the law is strictly applied to cases, rather, a fact-finding panel. Therefore, it is the duty of every petitioner and in fact, all parties who present petitions and defence before this panel to bring all facts and evidence in support of their cases before the panel.”

The inaugural sitting of the panel was held on Thursday at the Finance Building, State Secretariat, after the members of the panel swore to an oath to carry out the assignment justly and objectively.

A retired High Court Judge, Justice Akinwale Oladimeji, was appointed as the Chairman of the panel with Prof. Wasiu Oyedokun, Comrade Ismail Abduil Azeez, Prof. Grace Akinola, Biodun Layoun (SAN), Mr Abdulrahman Okunade (NBA), Abayoni Ogundele Esq, Mr. Jide Akano, Mr. Jumoke Ogunkeyede, Teslim Salaudeen, Comrade Oluwasegun Idowu, and Ayo Ologun as members while Mrs. Kemi Bello from the State Ministry of Justice is secretary to the panel.

The chairman of the panel assured that every case brought before it would be fairly handled to ensure that victims get justice. He adjourned the matter to Saturday, November 14, 2020, for further hearing.
