Ekiti State Government has commenced the distribution of cash and food items to empower 260 multiple birth mothers with a sum of N24 million.

The First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, while distributing the cash and food items, stressed the need for robust family planning practice in the state to reduce maternal and child mortality rate.

Erelu Fayemi spoke in Ado-Ekiti, during the first phase of disbursement of cash and food items to mothers of multiple babies in Ekiti State.

The programme was organised by the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with the office of the First lady of Ekiti state, under the    “Multiple Birth Trust Fund” as part of the policies of Dr. Kayode Fayemi-led administration launched in 2011, to alleviate poverty and combat child mortality in Ekiti.

Erelu Fayemi said: “I appeal to the multiple birth mothers to run away from the female genital mutilation (FGM) practice. The government has empowered practitioners who are ready to leave the job in exchange for a more legal and dignifed means of livelihood.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Maryam Ogunlade, charged the mothers to always take good care of their children, especially during this time of the outbreak of COVID-19, advising them to take the precautionary measures to ensure that a quick end is brought to the spread of the pandemic.
