Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, has met with the leadership of the Sports Writers Association (SWAN) over the assault of some journalists during the finals of the Emir’s Cup on Saturday.
The Police Machine FC defeated Musty FC 1-0 to lift the trophy but descended on some SWAN members and organisers at the end of the match over prize money.
Speaking during the meeting which held at the police headquarters, the CP said “We have commenced investigation immediately and I want to assure you that the identified culprits will be brought to book”.
“You should expect that this is the beginning of good things to come as far as sports is concerned in the Nigerian Police Force (Kwara State Command).
“We will do our best to encourage sports, create an enabling environment, and equipment for the athletes to train. I can assure that we will produce athletes who will compete in International championships and bring back laurels”, he added.
He said “Sports is a unifying factor and I am a sports man. You know what it means to bring home the Cup. We are happy; it makes us very proud,” he said.
Chairman of SWAN in Kwara State, Mallam Ayodeji Ismail thanked Olaiya for his proficiency in handling the assault on members of SWAN, noting that his intervention will lead to an amicable resolution.
