Emirate group raises alarm over sale of ancestral homes

The Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) has cried out over the incessant sale of family houses and inherited lands by Ilorin sons and daughters.

The President of the union, Alhaji Aliyu Otta-Uthman, raised the alarm on Saturday during IEDPU’s 56th Annual National Conference and Fund Raising for the completion of the Ilorin Emirate Skills Acquisition Hub.

He said the heritage and inheritance of the people were gradually being sold to non-indigenes because of money which would have a devastating effect on culture and religion.

“We want to caution our people to go for lease rather than outright sale of land and ancestral homes,” he said.

In his sermon, the guest speaker and National Missioner of Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria and Abroad, Sheikh Abdulmumini Ayara, warned of the consequences of such action on the unity of the state.

According to him, “Presently, we are aware of a piece of land by a family that is about to be sold for N50m. We will make sure we intervene. But this must stop in Ilorin Emirate because of the implication on our culture and collective unity.”

Also speaking, the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, urged the residents of Ilorin and the state as a whole to continue to live in peace and harmony.
