The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, and other eminent personalities have called on members of the Bayero University Mass Communication Association Alumni (BUMCAA) to continue to support the development of the department and that of the institution.

Bayero, who is also a graduate of Mass Communication, class 1984, made the call Saturday in Kano at a lecture organised by BUMCAA to mark the 40th Anniversary of the first set of graduates from the department.

“It is good for us to see how we can continue assisting our alma mater, based on our ability. We should also assist those who are less privileged in the society,” he said.

The emir urged students and alumni to continue to be good ambassadors of the institution wherever they find themselves.

In his remarks, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas, congratulated the department for the successes recorded.

Represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Management Services, Prof. Mahmud Sani, said that alumni had great roles to play in the development of the institution.

The guest lecturer, Alhaji Garba Bello-Kankarofi, former Registrar, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON), who was the first student registered in the first set (Class of 1981), spoke on the “Importance of Alumni Association and its Relevance”.

He advised alumni to ensure a stable and friendly relationship with the institution.

The Head of Mass Communication Department, Dr Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi, said that the department, now a faculty, was created in 1978 with 31 students and four academic staff.

He said it had started a new FM radio station tagged, “BUK-FM 98.9”, serving as a platform for training broadcast students.

He added that the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) had also approved the license for the establishment of a television station in the institution.

In their separate goodwill messages, the Majority Leader, House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, an alumnus of 1990, donated N10million to the faculty and the department while the member representing Kano Municipal, Sha’aban Sharada, an alumnus of 2011, secured approval for the establishment of a computer laboratory for the department through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
