A member of the Keffi Ponies team Babaduna Kanoma Ali has said Sunday’s victory over Nigeria’s most decorated Fifth Chukker polo team in the Emir of Kano Cup final was a major achievement for the Nasarawa based team.
Ali who was the assistant tournament manager of this year’s Keffi International polo tournament held in May told Daily Trust in a chat that the 6-6 after the final chukka against a top team like Fifth Chukker was a testament to how far the team has come despite their relative newness to the sport in Nigeria.
“We are immensely proud to have recorded the victory over a very formidable opponent and I will say it’s one of the major high points for Keffi Ponies and hopefully we will be celebrating many more Cup wins in times to come.”
The two team’s clash was one of the most anticipated battles of the recently concluded Kano international tournament and both teams lived up to the billing parading some of the biggest stars across the country.
At the end of the sixth Chukka, the game was evenly poised at 6-6 before a coin toss was used by the officials to get the eventual winner.
Speaking to Daily Trust at the venue of the events, Vice-Captain of the Kano polo club Faruk Ibrahim hailed everyone involved with the preparations and actualization of the tournament.
He also called on the authorities to do all they can to support the sport as it has massive potential that could propel the country to greater heights on different levels.
“We are glad with the way things started and now we are here, I will like to commend the efforts of everyone involved, our chairman and the corporate sponsors. We all have played a huge role for the actualisation of this event and hopefully next year will be better,” he said.
