The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has called on authorities to adopt a preventive approach to epidemics like cholera outbreak instead of responding to it since it has become a perennial case to contend with.
The emir made the call during a media chat organised by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) at his palace.
He emphasised the need for the people to desist from open defecation and embrace proper hygiene as measures to curtail the menace of the disease.
He also called on the public to get COVID-19 vaccine and other relevant vaccinations as the cold season is fast approaching.
He urged all stakeholders concerned to ensure proper childbirth registration in the state, and implore the media to do more in sensitising the public on health issues.
Speaking after the event, UNICEF Chief of Kano office, Maulid Warfa, said it was a welcome development to have such commitment from the emir on children’s development.
He said UNICEF had been working with various government ministries, departments and agencies in the promotion of children’s health and other development issues, adding that the Fund would continue to do more to ensure sustainability of the positive development so far attained.
