The Emir of Dutse, Dr Nuhu Muhammadu Sanusi, was appointed pioneer Chancellor of the Sokoto State University, Sokoto, by a former Governor of the state, Alhaji Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, who established the institution, and the appointment was renewed by Gov Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and today, Saturday, March 13, 2021, he would be installed as chancellor.
Born in 1945 at Yargaba village in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State, Dr Sanusi attended Dutse Elementary School from 1952 to 1956. After his post primary education, he obtained a National Certificate in Education (NCE) from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, and later a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in International Business from Ohio University, United States of America. He further obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Project Planning and Analysis from Bradford University, United Kingdom.
The emir was awarded an honorary PhD in Management by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Imo State.
He acquired substantial experience in agricultural consultancy and industrial and commercial management after working for several years.
Daily Trust gathered that the 76-year-old emir has travelled widely to European countries, including Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Australia, Switzerland and France. He also visited many Latin American countries including Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, British Columbia, Argentina, Peru and Cuba.
Dr Sanusi has also visited many Asian countries which include Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Philippines and Nepal; and many countries in the Middle East.
Back to Africa, the emir has visited many countries. Beside his passion for travelling, Dr Sanusi wrote and presented several papers at international and national seminars on various topics and has written several books, including his autobiography and the history of Dutse.
Under his reign, Dutse Emirate metamorphosed from a sleepy town to a prosperous city where not only the economic fortunes of its people have increased remarkably, but also the level of educational and spiritual awareness rekindled.
He established several private schools for youths and adults and has encouraged the community to seek knowledge as the main tool for development. No wonder the Government of Sokoto State, in collaboration with the Council and Management of the Sokoto State University picked him as chancellor of the university.
As chancellor, Dr Sanusi is expected to bring tremendous development to the institution in academic and non-academic areas. He will surely use his vast experience and connections to move the university to greater heights.
At today’s convocation, a total of 36 students would be awarded first class, while 1,473 students are expected to participate in the joint first, second and third convocation ceremony of the institution.
The Vice Chancellor (VC), Prof Sani Muhammad Dangoggo, revealed this in a statement issued by the university’s spokesman, Alhaji Zayyanu Shehu.
The VC said the institution was operating with three faculties: arts and social sciences, education and science.
He, however, said the university had three academic centres and supporting units: Centre for Study of Sokoto Caliphate, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Centre for Entrepreneurial Research and Development, Academic Planning Unit and Students Industrial Working Experience Scheme (SIWES) Unit.
Daily Trust Saturday further gathered that at today’s convocation, there will be conferment of honourary doctorate degrees on three distinguished personalities: Emir of Dutse, Dr Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi; Chairman of BUA, Alhaji Abdulsamad Isyaka Rabiu; and posthumously, late Alhaji Umaru Shinkafi.
