Electoral Act: IPAC, others laud Buhari over assent

The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) and some of the registered political parties have commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill on 25th February.

The council said on Friday in Abuja in a statement by its National Organizing Secretary/acting National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Egbeola Martins, that the development is victory for democracy, credible elections and representative governance in Nigeria.

He said that a free, fair, credible, transparent, generally acceptable, peaceful and inclusive election is the beauty of constitutional rule, especially that Nigerians yearn for improved electoral process ahead of the 2023 general elections.

“The new Electoral Act is a tremendous boost to sustainable democracy in the country. It has restored confidence in the nation’s political process, particularly the use of electronic voting and electronic transmission of results,” Martins said.

On his part, National Chairman of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Alhaji Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, President Buhari’s action is democracy in action.

He said that the Electoral Act 2022 is remarkable, historic, revolutionary and has breath fresh air in the nation’s electoral process essential for participatory democracy in Nigeria.

“Despite all the impediments to this landmark electoral reform, the new electoral law has paved way for free, fair and credible elections in the country.

“The introduction of full electronic voting system guarantees one man, one vote in every election. It eliminates rigging and all forms of electoral malpractices that characterized the nation’s democratic encounter,” Dantalle said.

He also urged INEC to use the forthcoming Ekiti and Osun governorship elections to test run the electronic voting system to pave way for hitch free polls in 2023.

Also, the Young Progressives Party (YPP) urge Nigerians to take advantage of the new Electoral Act in the interest of the nation’s democracy.

National Publicity Secretary of YPP, Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, said, “However, it is not yet Uhuru and there is still much to be done to ensure we harvest from the potential gains of the 2022 Electoral Act since same didn’t effectively address the problems of vote-buying, ignorance and poverty.”

In the same vein, the National Rescue Movement (NRM) the signing of the 2022 Electoral Act, is a positive step towards revolutionizing the electoral process in Nigeria.

National Publicity Secretary of the NRM, Prince Chinedu Obi, said that there is no gainsaying that signing the 2022 Electoral Act probably is the greatest achievement and legacy of the Buhari administration.

He said that this is also instructive noting that President Buhari has been both a victim and beneficiary of a poor and relatively improved electoral process respectively.

He also commended the INEC, the National Assembly, the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), CSOs, the media and all stakeholders, who have worked tirelessly in the last few years to ensure that a credible and a more improved electoral process is put in place to govern the administration and implementation of the 2023 general election as well as future elections in Nigeria.
