Electoral Act: CSOs urges Buhari to sign Bill into law

A Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law without further delay.

Daily Trust reports that the National Assembly passed the bill and forwarded same to Mr President for assent on 19 November.

The Executive Director, Adopt A Goal for Development, Mr. Ariyo-Dare Atoye, who spoke on behalf of the coalition, at a rally on Thursday in Abuja, said Mr. President would be doing the country a huge favor by signing the bill into law.

“History beckons on him to the signed Electoral Bill 2021 as a perfect gift to Nigerians. This is an opportunity to etch his name in Nigeria’s democratic plate. President Buhari in June had promised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that he would provide it with the relevant instrument to enable it discharge its responsibilities more effectively.

“The opportunity has come for the president to show fidelity to his words by rejecting excuses being made by some politicians who want to continue with the business-as-usual politics,” Atoye said.

They also wrote a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, which they took to the Presidential Villa for submission.

Other members of the coalition who signed the letter include Maryam Ahmed, Programme Officer, Center For Liberty; Jude Feranmi, Convener, Raising New Voices; Simi Olusola, and Executive Director, The Nigerian Alliance among others.
